Singaporean Man Pleads Guilty to $245 Million Crypto Theft
A 22-year-old Singaporean man has pleaded guilty to his role in an international cryptocurrency racketeering operation that stole and laundered over $245 million in digital assets.
Lam, a former eighth-grade dropout who lived in Miami, admitted to participating in a RICO conspiracy after investigators linked him to a network that used social engineering to target cryptocurrency holders.
The group's most significant theft occurred on August 18, 2024, when they targeted a Washington, DC-based victim and convinced them that their accounts were facing security problems. The conspirators posed as representatives of Google and the Gemini cryptocurrency exchange to gain access to the victim's Google Drive and reveal security codes.
The operation was allegedly larger than the single Washington theft, with members stealing over $14 million in cryptocurrency from another victim in July 2024. Lam and his associates used various channels to move the stolen money and convert it into cash and luxury purchases.
