Smaller Amusement Parks Gain Recognition for Unique Experiences and Affordability

Amusement parks in the US have undergone significant changes over the years. With the rise of megaresorts like Disney and Universal, many regional parks have been overshadowed by their immersive storytelling and multiday resort vacations.

However, these smaller parks often offer unique experiences that can't be replicated at the larger resorts. Many are more affordable, with lower ticket prices, cheaper food, and free or inexpensive parking.

The Golden Ticket Awards, presented annually since 1998 by Amusement Today, recognize excellence in various categories, including roller coasters. According to the awards, Fury 325 at Carowinds in North Carolina was named the world's best steel roller coaster for the 10th time.

One such park that stands out is Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park, California. With its rich history dating back to the 1920s as a roadside berry stand, it offers a mix of history, thrills, and nostalgia. The park features classic wooden coasters like GhostRider and Silver Bullet, along with modern thrill rides such as Xcelerator and HangTime.

Busch Gardens Williamsburg in Virginia is another notable mention, boasting one of the strongest roller coaster lineups on the East Coast. Its beautiful landscape and European-themed villages provide a unique atmosphere that sets it apart from other parks. Other notable mentions include Hersheypark in Pennsylvania, with its impressive collection of roller coasters, and Holiday World in Indiana, known for its wooden coaster and water park.

These smaller parks often get overlooked by families and thrill-seekers who flock to the larger megaresorts. However, they offer a more relaxed atmosphere and are easier to visit in a single day without breaking the bank.
