Smartphone Manufacturers' Lost-Device Tools: Are You Ready?
The frustrating experience of losing your phone is all too familiar to many of us. Fortunately, most smartphone manufacturers have implemented powerful tools that can help locate a missing device and protect its contents. These features are typically enabled on iPhones running iOS 7 or later, Google Pixel devices, and Samsung Galaxy phones.
To take advantage of these features, it's essential to set them up while your phone is still in your possession. For iPhone users, this means enabling Find My iPhone in the Settings app, which allows Apple's Find My system to locate the device when it's online or offline for a period after being turned off.
On supported iPhones, the Find My network can remain active for up to 24 hours after the phone is powered down or reaches a critically low battery level. Additionally, enabling Send Last Location sends the iPhone's location to Apple when its battery reaches a low level, providing another potential place to check if the device goes missing.
Meanwhile, Stolen Device Protection offers an extra layer of security by requiring Face ID or Touch ID for sensitive actions and triggering a one-hour Security Delay followed by another biometric check in certain situations. This feature cannot be turned off while Stolen Device Protection is enabled.
