Smollan Achieves Seamless Global Migration to Google Workspace
Smollan, a global retail solutions company, has successfully completed a massive migration from Microsoft 365 to Google Workspace, involving over 9,000 users across 25 companies. The 547-day transformation program, completed in June 2026, moved 7.01 petabytes of data, 2.4 billion emails, and approximately 290 billion documents without any operational downtime or data loss. The project achieved a 99.77% verified success rate, marking a significant milestone in the company's digital transformation.
The migration was complex due to Smollan's distributed operating model, spanning more than 60 countries, 90,000 employees, and multiple time zones. The company sought a productivity environment better suited for real-time global collaboration and AI integration. Argility, the Google Workspace Premier Partner within Smollan Technologies, designed the program around Google’s three-pillar framework, covering technical deployment, change management, and project management. The migration was divided into cohorts based on business units, geographies, and risk profiles, ensuring a smooth transition.
Key to the success was the coexistence architecture, allowing Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace to operate simultaneously during the transition. Dual-delivery mail flow minimized the risk of lost emails, and each migration cohort had an active rollback protocol. Change management was embedded from the beginning, with a Google Champion Network and multilingual training delivered through various channels. A structured Gemini AI enablement program was also introduced to help employees adapt to the new environment.
The migration not only provided a more integrated environment for global collaboration but also strengthened connectivity and security. David Smollan, Chief Executive Officer, noted that the transition to a truly cloud-native technology estate is a significant competitive advantage. The project also serves as a reference architecture for delivering complex Microsoft 365-to-Google Workspace migrations for other multinational enterprises. Argility's Japie Saunders emphasized the unique experience gained from rolling out Google Workspace on their own infrastructure, highlighting the scalability and global standards achieved.
