Soccer's Search Interest Surges, But Can It Last?
A recent spike in search interest for soccer on Google Trends suggests that the sport is gaining traction in America, but its long-term success remains uncertain. The upward climb in search activity reached an all-time high during the 2026 FIFA World Cup and has shown little sign of slowing down.
Historical data from Google Trends reveals a pattern where interest surges dramatically during the World Cup, only to drop off significantly after four to eight weeks. By six months, search interest returns to pre-tournament figures. This pattern has been observed in every World Cup over the past 20 years, with the exception of the 2018 edition, which generated little noise due to the USMNT's failure to qualify.
The current trend may be different, however, as the 2026 World Cup created a unique opportunity for soccer fans to engage with the sport on multiple levels. The tournament was hosted on home soil, and research shows that immersive experiences like the World Cup can create stronger identification and loyalty among participants. Furthermore, the MLS has expanded to 30 teams, and sports streaming services have improved dramatically.
