Songwriter Steve Seskin Inspires Students with Anti-Bullying Message
Washington Discovery Academy students were treated to an inspiring session on bullying prevention, delivered through the power of music. The school hosted Steve Seskin, a renowned songwriter known for co-writing the hit “Don’t Laugh at Me,” for an engaging assembly. Seskin, who has authored seven #1 songs, used a blend of music, storytelling, and interactive discussions to convey the importance of empathy, kindness, and respect.
Seskin’s approach was unique, as he avoided a traditional lecture format and instead connected with students through songs and personal anecdotes. This method helped the young audience grasp the significance of treating others with consideration and standing up against bullying. Principal Josh Overmyer highlighted the effectiveness of using music to drive home such critical messages. “Music has a unique way of helping us connect with ideas and emotions,” Overmyer noted, adding that Seskin’s presentation offered students a fresh perspective on fostering a respectful and inclusive school environment.
The event was organized by Honeywell Arts in Education, a program dedicated to bringing artists and arts-based experiences into schools. The initiative aims to provide students with meaningful learning opportunities through creative expressions. The assembly reinforced the idea that bullying prevention is an ongoing effort, shaped by everyday choices like choosing kindness, showing empathy, and promoting inclusivity.
Washington Discovery Academy expressed gratitude to Honeywell Arts in Education for facilitating Seskin’s visit, which provided students with an engaging and memorable way to learn about an important social issue.
