Sora Shutdown Derails $1B Disney-OpenAI Partnership
OpenAI has ended its consumer video product, Sora, which was set to integrate Disney's entertainment ecosystem. The shutdown came unexpectedly, ending a three-year partnership between OpenAI and Disney. Under this agreement, users could create short videos featuring over 200 characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars franchises.
The deal, announced in December, had Disney planning to invest $1 billion in OpenAI. The companies also explored using Sora-generated videos on Disney+ and developing tools powered by OpenAI for various products. Additionally, they discussed providing ChatGPT access to Disney employees.
The shutdown does not imply that OpenAI has abandoned video research altogether. According to published materials, video generation is a component of work on systems that understand motion and physical environments.
