Southwest Airlines Pushes Back Boarding Times Amid Carry-On Crunch
Southwest Airlines is implementing a five-minute earlier boarding time for most domestic Boeing 737-800 and MAX 8 flights starting August 1, 2026. The change aims to address cabin congestion caused by the elimination of free checked bags. Passengers will need to arrive at the gate 30 minutes before departure for these routes.
The airline ended its iconic 'Two Bags Fly Free' policy in May 2025 and increased bag fees in April 2026. As a result, passengers have been carrying more luggage on board, leading to fuller overhead bins and longer boarding times. The new assigned seating system has also contributed to the congestion.
Southwest is retrofitting its fleet with larger overhead bins, but this process will not be complete until the end of 2026. Until then, the extended boarding time will serve as a temporary solution.
