Space Mountain's Long Wait Times Hint at Major Overhaul in 2027

Space Mountain, one of the most recognizable rides at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom, has been experiencing long wait times lately. The indoor roller coaster, which opened in 1975, has been averaging a staggering 67-minute wait time.

This is a significant increase from previous weeks, with some days seeing waits as long as an hour and a half. Despite the long lines, Space Mountain remains a popular attraction, especially among fans of classic Disney experiences.

However, the ride's age has become a concern for many guests. With years of heavy use taking its toll, Space Mountain's roughness and dated technology have made it feel less charming and more uncomfortable.

Rumors have been circulating that Space Mountain may undergo a major refurbishment in 2027, but nothing has been officially announced by Disney. A potential closure would allow the company to address aging components and update the ride system, trains, track, effects, lighting, show elements, queue areas, or other aspects of the attraction.

But taking Space Mountain offline for an extended period would remove one of Tomorrowland's biggest attractions from the park, pushing additional guests toward TRON Lightcycle / Run and other nearby experiences. This creates a complicated problem for Disney, as they need to consider the timing carefully to avoid overloading other areas of the park.
