Spam Filters Cost GOP $117M in Donations

A bombshell study has revealed that Republican candidates lost out on an estimated $117 million in donations last year due to email spam filters. The researchers found that between June 30, 2025, and September 15, 2026, fundraising emails from the GOP were being aggressively labeled as spam by Google's Gmail, Microsoft Outlook, and Yahoo.

The study, conducted by Cameron Ellis of the University of Iowa and Lars Powell of the University of Alabama, found that during this period, first-time donations on WinRed plummeted by 75% compared to normal levels across Gmail, Outlook, and Yahoo. The researchers estimated that these missing donations would have amounted to $117 million, based on a review of data from the Federal Election Commission.

The study did not conclude whether the spam problem was due to bias, but rather highlighted the lack of transparency in how email providers' spam filters work. A Google spokesperson pushed back against the study's findings, claiming that its methodology was flawed and that the company's spam protections apply equally to everyone, regardless of political affiliation.
