Spotify Beats Google to AI-Powered Running Feature
Google's AI-powered features have been touted as revolutionary, but it appears that a Swedish music company has beaten them to the punch. In August 2026, Spotify launched its AI-powered Running Mode on Android, available to Premium subscribers in seven markets including the US, Canada, and the UK.
The feature generates a playlist and structures your workout around it, complete with audio cues to guide you through your run. However, users have noted that Running Mode is plan-based, meaning it doesn't adjust to changes in cadence or tempo.
Google has all the pieces needed for a seamless running experience, but hasn't put them together yet. The company owns Android, builds the Pixel Watch 5, and has Health Connect for passing live biometrics between apps and YouTube Music with its generative playlist tools. If it connected these services, users could have a running feature that beats Spotify's.
