Spotify Premium Revenue Growth Driven by Subscriber Expansion and Pricing Strategy
Spotify's premium revenue growth continues to be driven by subscriber and monetization gains. The company reported a 15% year-over-year increase in Premium revenues to €4.33 billion, or 16% on a constant-currency basis. This growth is supported by the expansion of subscribers, which rose 9%, as well as an increase in Premium ARPU (Average Revenue Per User) to €4.89. The ARPU figure advanced 7% year over year and 7.4% on a constant-currency basis.
The company's pricing strategy has contributed significantly to the growth in premium revenue, with price increases providing the main lift. However, product and market mix has limited some of the benefit. Despite this, Spotify's focus on monetization has paid off, as higher pricing is translating into stronger premium monetization without interrupting subscriber expansion.
The company's advertising segment also showed measured progress, with Ad-Supported revenues growing 1% year over year, or 3% at constant currency. Music advertising benefited from more impressions sold, but softer pricing partly reduced that contribution. Podcasting improved through stronger sponsorship activity across Spotify's Owned and Licensed portfolio.
Spotify's growth strategy has been compared to its peers Apple AAPL and Amazon AMZN, which also offer audio streaming services. While Apple benefits from tight integration between its music service and device ecosystem, and Amazon can connect streaming with Prime memberships and smart speakers, Spotify relies more directly on subscriber growth, ARPU gains, and advertising execution.
