Squishmallows Invade the Big Screen
Amazon MGM is reportedly planning to replicate the box-office success of Barbie with its own toy movie, based on the popular Squishmallows brand. The studio is developing a 'tentpole family film' in collaboration with Jazwares, the creator of the plushies, and partnering with Moana producer Beau Flynn.
Squishmallows gained massive attention during the COVID-19 pandemic due to its wide range of designs and textures, including animals, foods, and objects. The brand has since introduced over 3,000 Squishmallow designs and has a significant presence on social media, with an official Instagram account having a million followers and amassing more than 13 billion views on TikTok.
The studio spared no expense for the deal, hoping to build a global-facing, four-quadrant event. However, it remains unclear whether the movie will be animated, live-action, or a hybrid. Beau Flynn has helmed several notable productions in the past, including Disney movies like Moana and Jungle Cruise.
