Stablecoins Challenge Visa and Mastercard's Dominance
Visa and Mastercard, two of the largest payment processing companies in the world, may face a challenge from stablecoins. Stablecoins are cryptocurrencies pegged to a major fiat currency that can be used for faster and cheaper transactions.
These digital currencies can settle transactions nearly instantly at much lower fees than traditional wire networks, which are currently used by Visa and Mastercard. Merchants could potentially bypass the companies' payment processing systems with stablecoin payments.
To counter this threat, Visa and Mastercard have started integrating stablecoins into their platforms to upgrade their backend software.
This move may compress the near-term margins of both companies, but embracing stablecoins could also expand their total addressable markets by unlocking new payment volumes from businesses that previously avoided credit cards.
