SteamOS Takes Giant Leap Towards Nvidia GPU Support
Valve is making significant progress towards enabling native support for Nvidia GeForce RTX GPUs in SteamOS, its operating system for PC gamers. The company has recently enabled an Nvidia driver within its main branch of SteamOS, allowing users to test and experience the performance of Nvidia hardware on their systems.
Although this marks a major step forward, the performance of Nvidia GeForce GPUs in SteamOS is still not 'state of the art.' Valve's engineers are working tirelessly to unlock the full potential of Nvidia hardware within SteamOS, with a focus on achieving parity with AMD Radeon support.
'Yeah, we're working on it hard. It's definitely at the top of our list,' said Pierre-Loup Griffais, a Valve representative, in an interview with IGN. 'It takes years' to develop and refine this level of support, but the team is committed to making SteamOS a viable gaming alternative to Windows.
Valve built SteamOS around AMD hardware, but its ambitions extend beyond its own devices. By supporting Nvidia GPUs, Valve aims to make SteamOS more broadly used and appealing to PC enthusiasts and OEMs who build their own Steam Machines.
