Stranded Hikers Warn Against Relying Solely on Google's Gemini AI

Three novice hikers from Roseville embarked on an ill-fated expedition to summit Mt. Shasta, relying heavily on Google's Gemini AI for navigation and planning. The group departed at 3 a.m. on Saturday with day packs, but their ascent turned into a multi-day ordeal when they failed to reach the summit by noon.

The Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office said the hikers were advised by Gemini to bring less food and water than necessary, which exacerbated their situation. The group eventually became stranded in Mud Creek Canyon after wandering off route, with one of them suffering a knee injury.

Rescue teams from the US Forest Service and Siskiyou County Sheriff's Search and Rescue Volunteers were deployed to assist, and all three hikers were safely returned to the trailhead. The incident serves as a cautionary tale for hikers relying on AI for trip planning, with officials urging them to verify route information and have multiple methods of wayfinding.
