Suffolk Reservoir Runs Dry Amidst Ongoing Heatwave
The £3 million Elveden Estate reservoir in Suffolk has almost completely run dry due to the ongoing heatwave, leaving farmers struggling to cope with water shortages. The reservoir, which was built last year and has a capacity of 200 Olympic-sized pools of water, held around 50 million litres before being depleted.
Andrew Blenkiron, managing director of Elveden Estate, said that despite having the reservoir, this year's drought is 'going to be tight' for farmers. He added that the estate has been 'incredibly testing' and that the heatwave is having a significant impact on crop yields.
The Elveden Estate produces onions, potatoes, and carrots for McDonald's and has seen a significant reduction in crops due to the severe weather. The reservoir relies on water from the River Lark during winter months, but with no rain in recent months, it has been unable to replenish its stores.
