Switzerland Ditches Microsoft 365 for Open-Source Software

The Swiss government has launched a pilot project to test replacing Microsoft 365 with open-source software. The move aims to reduce dependence on US services, improve operational reliability, and lower costs.

The project involves migrating 3,000 computers, representing 7% of the federal workforce, which is over 54,000 workstations in operation. Priority will be given to employees handling highly sensitive data.

A similar move by the Swiss Armed Forces from Microsoft 365 to openDesk is already underway and expected to complete by October. The government's effort is part of a broader 'digital sovereignty' initiative within the European Union, aiming to retain local control over data, applications, and infrastructure.
