Syria Reconnects with Global Financial System through First International Visa Transaction
Syria has made significant strides in rejoining the global financial system after years of isolation. The country's first international Visa transaction was completed by Syrian President Ahmed Al Shara, marking a major milestone in its economic recovery. This move follows the US's removal of Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism and paves the way for easier relationships between Syrian banks and international lenders.
The transaction, facilitated by Visa, Fransabank Lebanon, and Paymera, took place just days after Syria was officially removed from the US list. This development is expected to boost investment and trade in the country, which has been recovering since the fall of the Assad regime in 2024. The central bank governor hailed this as a 'new beginning' for the country's financial services.
Visa had previously signed an agreement with Syria's central bank in December and has been working to reintroduce digital payments in the country. This move is part of a broader effort to modernize Syria's financial infrastructure and increase its integration with international payment systems. The company plans to enable international visitors to use their Visa cards while in Syria.
