Trade War Rises: Canada Slaps Tariffs on Toilet Paper, Charmin Prices Could Soar

A trade war between the US and Canada could leave Americans facing higher toilet paper costs. In response to President Trump's 50% tariffs, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has vowed to match them 'dollar for dollar.' The list of nearly 900 American goods subject to tariffs includes toilet paper or face tissue stock, which will be taxed at 25%. Many US-based companies, such as Procter & Gamble, manufacture toilet paper products using imported Canadian lumber. This could lead to increased costs for both the companies and consumers.

The US imports significant amounts of toilet paper from Canada, with $328 million worth of goods coming in last year. The World Bank reports that this is by far the largest amount of toilet paper exported to the US. In response to previous tariffs, Procter & Gamble had already increased prices for its Charmin brand.

The trade war has escalated, with Trump threatening to rename Lake Ontario 'Lake America' if business between the two countries does not improve. Canadian Premier Doug Ford has responded by saying that former President Ronald Reagan would be 'spinning around in his grave' if he witnessed Trump's use of tariffs. Meanwhile, Trump has called Canada one of the 'worst countries in the world' to deal with.
