Taylor Defends Historic Immigration Cuts as Economy-Friendly
Opposition leader Angus Taylor has moved to calm business concerns over his plan to implement the largest cut to immigration in Australian history. Speaking on October 6, 2026, Taylor insisted that the proposed reductions would not harm the economy, despite significant changes to current policies.
The Coalition government plans to reduce the number of temporary visa holders by a net 650,000 during its first term in office. Annual net overseas migration would drop to 100,000 for the first two years before gradually increasing to a cap of 160,000 by the fourth year.
Taylor's announcement came as a surprise to some business leaders, who had expressed worries about the economic impact of such dramatic cuts. However, Taylor defended the changes, arguing that they have been carefully structured to avoid economic damage.
