Teaching Humans to Manage Autonomous AI Agents

As AI systems become more autonomous, companies are facing a new challenge: teaching employees how to manage and direct them. For the past two years, most training has focused on the basics of interacting with AI, such as prompting skills.

However, this level of interaction is no longer sufficient as AI agents begin to pursue goals, call tools, make recommendations, trigger actions, and hand work from one system to another.

The human role changes with the new generation of AI systems: employees are no longer simply users but people responsible for directing and overseeing the agent. According to Gianpaolo Barozzi, Cisco's 3P CTO, 'Agentic AI changes the relationship between people and technology. It requires new ways of setting boundaries, calibrating trust, and maintaining human accountability.'

Companies are not training their employees to lead these agents, but rather teaching them how to get more out of AI. This is becoming a significant capability gap in the next phase of enterprise AI.
