Tech Firms Reject Trump's 'Unbiased' AI Mandate as Unrealistic

The Business Software Alliance (BSA), representing major tech companies like Microsoft and IBM, has pushed back against the Trump administration's effort to require 'unbiased' AI systems in government contracts. The group argues that such requirements are unrealistic and could limit federal access to cutting-edge AI products.

The controversy stems from a recent report by the Washington Post finding left-leaning bias among leading AI chatbots on various issues, including diversity, equity, and inclusion, gay conversion, campaign finance, and police defunding. The BSA submitted comments to the General Services Administration (GSA) arguing that requiring contractors to guarantee 'truth-seeking' and 'ideologically neutral' responses is impractical.

The group pointed out that today's AI systems use probabilistic models, making perfect accuracy impossible. They also warned that the proposed rules could drive AI companies away from federal contracts, undermining the administration's goal of speeding up AI adoption across government.
