A lawsuit has been filed in California against leading tech companies SpaceX (SPCX), Google (GOOG, GOOGL), Anthropic (ANTHROPIC), and OpenAI (OPENAI) for allegedly colluding to slow down their AI efforts.

The lawsuit claims that these top AI companies violated antitrust laws when they agreed to coordinate slowdown efforts, which would reduce the value consumers get from paid AI subscriptions. This alleged coordination took place on September 12th, when Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay urging industrywide cooperation on decelerating advancements in favor of enhanced safety measures.

On that same day, OpenAI's Sam Altman, SpaceX AI's Elon Musk, and Google DeepMind's Demis Hassabis each publicly responded to Amodei's proposals in agreement. The plaintiffs argue that an agreement among chief rivals in AI to slow their progress has an anticompetitive effect on consumers.
