Tech Giants and Logistics Firm Join Forces for Zero-Emission Shipping Alliance
Microsoft and Google have joined forces with logistics company DSV to join the Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (ZEMBA). This alliance aims to reduce emissions tied to their supply chains. ZEMBA aggregates demand from cargo owners and conducts tenders for shipping services that rely on low- and zero-emission bunker fuels.
The first tender under ZEMBA was used by Hapag-Lloyd, which secured a contract with North Sea Container Line (NCL) in December 2025. As part of this arrangement, Hapag-Lloyd plans to use e-methanol on one of its transoceanic trade lanes, while NCL will use green ammonia on a northern European route.
Through the use of these fuels, the two shipping companies are expected to reduce around 120,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions combined over a three-year period starting in 2027. ZEMBA members will pay a premium for the resulting emission reductions, which will be distributed to participating cargo owners through a book-and-claim mechanism.
