Tech Giants Clash Over Future of Artificial Intelligence Development

The debate over the pace and safety of artificial intelligence has intensified after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for a slowdown in frontier AI development. Speaking at Dreamforce 2026 in San Francisco, Amodei urged companies to strengthen safety practices, improve transparency and act before serious incidents occur.

He argued that AI development has accelerated dramatically because increasingly capable systems can help create the next generation of AI. Citing the OpenAI-Hugging Face cybersecurity incident involving an AI 'swarm' as an example of potential risks from rapidly advancing capabilities, Amodei proposed stronger safety testing, independent evaluations, cooperation among leading AI companies and international coordination.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and xAI CEO Elon Musk have also voiced agreement with concerns about AI risks. However, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang expressed a different view, saying market forces can encourage responsible development without additional regulations.
