Tech Giants Gather at Trump-Xi Dinner Amidst Growing AI Debate
The intersection of geopolitics and the AI boom was on full display last week as several major tech companies gathered at the Trump-Xi state dinner in Washington. Among those in attendance were Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, and Meta's Mark Zuckerberg, all of whom have been making headlines with their respective comments on AI development.
Huang, in particular, stood out for his defense of AI spending, saying that labs unable to contain their own unsafe experiments 'should be shut down.' He rejected calls for an industry-wide slowdown, arguing that it would punish responsible developers alongside companies taking greater risks. Huang also pushed back against AI-doomsday forecasts, describing extinction-risk estimates as 'not grounded in science.'
Meanwhile, Tesla's Musk connected Grok, the company's AI software, with its vehicles and China. He told Chinese state broadcaster CCTV that Xi Jinping has been a 'great leader' under whom China has 'prospered immensely.' This comes against the backdrop of Tesla's significant manufacturing and sales exposure to China.
Meta, meanwhile, unveiled several new AI and mixed-reality products at its Meta Connect event. However, this hardware push also renewed scrutiny over the company's massive capital-spending plans, which now exceed the military budgets of every country except the U.S., China, and Russia.
