Tech Giants Join Forces with Logistics Firm to Reduce Shipping Emissions
Google, Microsoft, and logistics giant DSV have joined the Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (ZEMBA), a group that pools demand from cargo owners to tender for shipping services powered by low- and zero-emission fuels.
The alliance's goal is to tackle Scope 3 emissions generated in supply chains. ZEMBA's first tender was won by Hapag-Lloyd, which used liquefied biomethane to deliver contracted emissions reductions.
Hapag-Lloyd also won a subsequent e-fuel tender for 2027, awarded in December 2025, along with North Sea Container Line. Under those contracts, Hapag-Lloyd plans to deploy e-methanol on a transoceanic tradelane, while NCL will use green ammonia on a northern European service.
The two projects are expected to avoid around 120,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions over three years from 2027. ZEMBA members will pay a premium for the emissions reductions generated by using alternative fuels.
