Tech Giants Pivot to Long-Duration Energy Storage Amid Lithium-Ion Battery Shortfalls
Tech giants Google and Meta are pivoting to long-duration energy storage after recognizing the limitations of traditional lithium-ion batteries. These batteries can only store electricity for about four hours, which is insufficient to meet the needs of data centers that rely on renewable energy sources.
Long-duration energy storage systems, on the other hand, can store electricity for several hours or even days, making them a critical clean technology for enabling a stable power supply. Industry insiders note that it remains unclear who will dominate the global long-duration energy storage market.
According to estimates by energy research firms, since early 2025, the United States has seen at least 150 gigawatt-hours of long-duration energy storage projects announced, approved, or financed, more than five times the total capacity planned nationwide as of the end of 2024. This rapid growth is driven by AI data centers.
