Meta, Google, and TikTok are racing to develop age verification technology to identify children on their platforms. The effort is part of a broader trend in the tech industry to prioritize child safety online.

The $18 billion settlement between Meta and state attorneys general over allegations that Instagram and Facebook harmed children's mental health includes provisions for improving age assurance measures. Meta has one year to refine its approach, which currently relies on AI to estimate users' ages based on contextual clues such as posts about birthday celebrations or school hours.

While this method can accurately identify some minors, it is not foolproof and may result in false positives. The settlement also includes specific goals for reducing these errors. Additionally, the agreement requires Meta to delete any government-issued IDs submitted by users within 30 days.

Other companies like Roblox are using facial recognition technology to estimate users' ages. However, experts have raised concerns about the accuracy of this method, particularly for women or certain racial or ethnic groups.
