Tech Giants Sound Alarm on Imminent AI-Enabled Cyberattack Surge

More than 100 technology and financial companies have signed an open letter warning of a surge in AI-enabled cyberattacks. The signatories, which include OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Broadcom, Capital One, Cloudflare, CrowdStrike, General Motors, IBM, Mastercard, Oracle, Robinhood, Shopify, and Visa, urged governments and organizations to take collective action to strengthen digital infrastructure.

The letter emphasized that AI models are making advanced cyber capabilities cheaper and more accessible to attackers, posing a significant threat to critical infrastructure. The coalition called for a society-wide defensive surge, assigning distinct responsibilities to different sectors, including raising internal security standards, building AI-powered defense tools, sharing threat intelligence, and providing access to capable response models.

The warning comes after a wave of attacks on critical infrastructure, including one targeting U.S. water systems with an apparent AI-generated script. The Five Eyes alliance issued a similar warning in June, stating that the AI revolution was poised to 'fundamentally transform' cybersecurity.
