Tech Giants Step Up Transparency in AI-Generated Ads
Google has rolled out additional transparency features across its advertising products to help users better understand AI-generated ads. This move comes as industry standards evolve, and various countries have implemented regulations requiring conspicuous disclosure of synthetic content generated by AI.
The new feature allows users to access a 'How this ad was made' section in the My Ad Center panel, accessible globally on Search, YouTube, and Discover platforms.
Google's move builds on its existing efforts to increase transparency around AI usage. The company has already embedded signals like SynthID into outputs from generative AI tools and introduced a requirement to disclose synthetic or digitally altered content in election ads.
Meta, Facebook's parent company, has also updated its tagging system for Facebook and Instagram platforms, requiring a tag within the 'About this ad' settings menu. When an advertiser uses Meta's internal background or animation tools to create an ad, or if the system detects AI involvement, a disclosure will be automatically enabled.
TikTok has introduced new ways to enhance transparency, including expanding AI literacy efforts and testing improved detection systems for AI-generated spam. The company has also joined the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) steering committee, which develops open technical standards for tracking content origins.
