Tech Giants Unleash Wave of Mass Layoffs Amid AI Boom
The tech industry has been plagued by massive layoffs in recent months, with over 175,000 job losses reported so far this year. According to TrueUp, this number is faster than last year's pace of 245,000 job cuts.
Many of these companies are citing the adoption and deployment of AI technologies as a reason for the layoffs. Oracle, for example, cut 21,000 jobs over the past year, roughly 13% of its workforce, in an effort to streamline operations with AI.
Other notable job cuts include:
- TikTok: 250 layoffs and closure of Nashville office
- Zillow: 500 job cuts as part of organizational changes
- Etsy: 220 layoffs, primarily affecting product and engineering teams
- Microsoft: 4,800 job losses, mostly in the Xbox division
- Samsung: elimination of 179 jobs due to headquarters relocation
Some companies are also taking a more proactive approach to mitigating the impact of AI on their workforce. California Governor Gavin Newsom unveiled a tool to track AI's impact on employment, and over 4,500 Google workers signed a petition calling for layoff protections.
