Tennessee's Honors Course Prepares to Host Challenging USGA Championship
The Honors Course in Tennessee is preparing to host its seventh USGA championship, this time the U.S. Women's Amateur. The club was founded by John 'Jack' Lupton, a Coca-Cola heir and philanthropist, with a mission to celebrate amateur golf.
Lupton aimed to channel the ethos of Augusta National co-founder Bobby Jones, who embodied the amateur spirit. The course features holes named after accomplished amateur players and a logo inspired by the Tennessee State Amateur trophy.
The Pete Dye-designed layout is known for its risk-reward decisions and visual deception, with severe punishment for mistakes. Tiger Woods once described it as 'the hardest golf course I've ever played in my life.'
A tornado tore through the course in 2020, but a restoration by Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner preserved Dye's strategic intent while restoring key green contours.
