Tennis Serves Get a High-Tech Overhaul at US Open

Tennis players at the US Open are now being judged not just by their aces and speed, but also by advanced metrics. The IBM Stats system tracks 21 points on a player's body and racket 50 times per second to measure serve quality. This new metric rates serves from 0-100.

Ben Shelton, the top-ranked American man, is unhappy with the ATP's current ranking system, which he feels doesn't accurately reflect his service skills. He claims that a kick serve of 87 mph can be rated as low as 7.5 out of 10 in terms of quality.

Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands will face Shelton in the first round of the US Open, and IBM's new stat will provide a more comprehensive view of their service skills. Players like Taylor Fritz and Raphael Collignon have already seen their serve quality rated by the system.
