Ternus' Apple Takes Foldable Leap with iPhone Duo
Apple's recent product event under new CEO John Ternus marked a significant shift in the company's strategy. The introduction of the iPhone Duo, Apple's first foldable smartphone, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup, signals a move towards more innovative and AI-driven products.
The iPhone Duo features a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer screen, allowing users to run two apps side by side. Powered by Apple's new A20 Pro chip, the device is priced competitively at $1,999, compared to expectations of over $2,500.
Ternus emphasized the importance of AI in Apple's product strategy, positioning the iPhone as an intelligent personal hub that handles AI services on-device whenever possible. The company's Private Cloud Compute system is used when additional cloud processing is required. Siri AI has also begun rolling out in beta, with over 300,000 apps compatible at launch.
However, Apple's entry into the foldable market comes years after its competitors, Samsung and Huawei. Analysts estimate that foldables still account for a single-digit share of the overall smartphone market. The category may be relatively small, but it has significant revenue potential, with projections suggesting over $45 billion by 2027.
