Tex Johnston's Daring Barrel Roll Changes Aviation History

On August 7, 1955, Boeing test pilot Alvin 'Tex' Johnston performed an astonishing barrel roll in front of a massive crowd at Lake Washington during the Gold Cup hydroplane races. The aircraft was the Boeing 367-80, the prototype for the iconic 707 airliner.

The stunt caught the attention of Boeing's president, Bill Allen, who watched from a company yacht with other airline executives. According to accounts, Allen turned pale when he saw the plane roll upside down at low altitude, and his reaction was reportedly 'not recorded in language suitable for a corporate history.'

Johnston had planned the maneuver in advance, explaining that a barrel roll is a 1-G maneuver, which means the aircraft experiences no forces beyond those of normal flight. He performed two rolls, one on each pass, to demonstrate the jet's strength and agility.

The stunt was not authorized by Boeing's management, but it had an unexpected outcome: it helped convince airline executives that the 707 was safe and capable. The orders began pouring in, and the 707 went on to become a game-changer in commercial aviation, transforming the industry with its speed and efficiency.

Johnston, who had previously worked as an oil rig worker in Texas before becoming a pilot, continued to fly for Boeing until his retirement in 1968. He passed away in 1998 at the age of 84, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most accomplished test pilots of the jet age.
