TIF District Expansion Vote for Microsoft Data Center Postponed
A vote to expand the AM General TIF District in St. Joseph County to include the Microsoft Data Center Project has been postponed until at least next month.
The delay is due to county council members weighing in and candidates holding public education forums ahead of the vote, which was originally expected next week.
Jan Cervelli, a Democratic candidate for the St. Joseph County Council, held a public education session about TIFs and emphasized that the impact of expanding the district could be crucial for the entire county.
Councilwoman Amy Drake also expressed concerns in an August 12th letter, stating that while the project could bring significant development to the area, it may not benefit taxpayers as intended. She noted that tax money created by data centers is often locked up in TIFs and cannot reduce property tax bills for residents.
The vote will now take place on September 22nd at 6:00 p.m., allowing more time for public input and discussion.
