Tim Cook announced his departure as Apple's CEO after nearly 15 years at the helm. He will transition to the executive chairman role, while John Ternus takes over daily operations on September 1.

Cook became CEO in August 2011, following Steve Jobs' death and took control of a company that had grown from one of the most influential founders in the tech industry into a $4 trillion giant.

Under Cook's leadership, Apple grew exponentially, with iPhone sales reaching approximately 3.1 billion units during his tenure, according to data released by the International Data Corporation. The Financial Times reports that Apple's stock has more than tripled since Cook's arrival, and the company has paid back over $1 trillion to its shareholders via buybacks and dividends.

Cook focused on scale, operational discipline, services, supply-chain control, and monetization of Apple's massive device base. He made significant strides in diversifying Apple's revenue streams beyond hardware sales alone, introducing services like the App Store, Apple Music, iCloud, and Apple Pay.

The European Union has been a tough regulator for Apple, demanding $14.4 billion in back taxes in 2016 and issuing antitrust fines totaling around $4 billion since 2011. Apple is also facing regulatory challenges regarding its policies on the App Store and compliance with the EU's Digital Markets Act.

Cook leaves behind an unfinished chapter in artificial intelligence, where Apple has taken a measured approach to joining the generative AI revolution. The company has not built as much AI infrastructure as some of its competitors but has done some through technology partnerships.
