Tobacco and Pharma Ties Complicate Surgeon General Nominee's Bid
President Donald Trump's nominee for surgeon general, Nicole Saphier, has disclosed significant investments in tobacco and pharmaceutical companies. Her financial disclosures reveal holdings in Philip Morris International, as well as beverage giants Monster Beverage Corp, Coca-Cola Co, and Pepsi Co. In an ethics agreement, she pledged to divest from these companies and sell stock in numerous pharmaceutical and biotechnology leaders.
Saphier's investments raise questions about her potential conflict of interest in promoting public health policies. The surgeon general is considered America's doctor, responsible for communicating scientific information on healthy living to the American people. Saphier has been a vocal advocate for reducing ultra-processed foods and promoting exercise, but her financial ties may undermine her credibility.
As part of her nomination process, Saphier has taken an unpaid leave of absence from her role as director of breast imaging at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New Jersey. The Trump administration's third attempt to fill the position follows the withdrawal of previous nominees Janette Nesheiwat and Casey Means due to lack of Senate support.
