Top AI Companies Accused of Secretly Slowing Down Development
A new lawsuit claims that top AI companies Anthropic, OpenAI, SpaceXAI, and Google secretly collaborated to slow down their respective AI development. The lawsuit argues that this agreement violates antitrust laws and reduces the value consumers get from paid AI subscriptions.
The alleged coordination began in July 2026 when high-ranking employees signed a statement acknowledging intense competitive pressure not to unilaterally slow development. This led to a public call for industrywide cooperation on decelerating advancements in favor of enhanced safety measures, with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei publishing an essay urging for cross-lab discussions.
The same day, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, SpaceXAI CEO Elon Musk, and Google DeepMind's co-founder and chair Demis Hassabis publicly agreed with Amodei's proposals. However, the lawsuit alleges that this coordination began months earlier.
The plaintiffs argue that antitrust laws forbid companies from taking a 'shortcut' by agreeing to collective restraint instead of individual accountability. They claim that AI development should be driven by competition, which allows for responsibility and genuine progress.
