Travelers Keeps Top Credit Rating with Strong Balance Sheet
The rating agency AM Best has reaffirmed The Travelers Companies, Inc.'s (NYSE: TRV) superior credit ratings due to its strong balance sheet and operating performance. According to AM Best, Travelers' strongest level of risk-adjusted capitalization as measured by the Best's Capital Adequacy Ratio (BCAR) is a key support for the balance sheet strength rating.
Travelers reported $4.1 billion in net underwriting income in 2025, marking its largest such figure in history. The group's very strong operating performance reflects sustained underwriting and operating profitability over the long term.
AM Best also noted Travelers' conservative investment portfolio and comprehensive reinsurance programs as supports for the balance sheet strength rating. The agency maintained a stable outlook for the insurer, citing its strongest balance sheet strength assessment and very strong operating performance.
Travelers maintains strong market positions as the fifth largest property/casualty (P/C) insurer in the United States based on 2025 direct premiums written. It ranks as the seventh largest personal lines writer and the second largest commercial lines writer, according to AM Best data.
