Treasury Debt Buybacks Boost US Stocks Amid Trump Tariff Pause
US stocks opened higher on August 19 after the Treasury Department announced plans to increase buybacks of longer-dated government debt, sending Treasury yields sharply lower.
The move also came as investors assessed President Donald Trump's decision to pause tariffs on Canadian goods. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose about 230 points, or 0.4%, at the open, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite each gained 0.4%.
Among individual stocks, Moderna shares surged after the company reported positive results from a late-stage trial of an experimental melanoma vaccine developed with Merck. The Treasury said it would at least double the size of its government debt repurchases, targeting bonds with maturities of 10 to 30 years, including 20-year debt.
The move pushed yields on longer-dated Treasuries lower and eased some pressure on equity markets. The 30-year Treasury yield fell nearly 9 basis points to 5.196%, while the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield declined 6 basis points to 4.647%.
