Trump Administration Blocks Apple's Chinese Chip Plan Amid National Security Concerns

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick recently informed Apple that the Trump administration opposes its plan to buy memory chips from Chinese suppliers CXMT and YMTC. This move blocks one of the few options available to ease a memory shortage that has driven up iPhone and MacBook prices this year.

The Commerce Secretary relayed the administration's opposition directly to Apple, following a visit to the company's new Advanced Manufacturing Center in Houston with Tim Cook. Lutnick stated that the Trump administration is 'not in favor' of Apple buying memory from Chinese suppliers, citing national security concerns tied to the Entity List designation.

Apple had been negotiating for months to purchase memory chips from CXMT and YMTC, which would have allowed it to diversify its supply chain and reduce reliance on suppliers squeezed by the same AI-driven demand behind the broader RAM shortage. However, with this path now blocked, Apple's remaining options are slower ones, such as waiting for global memory production to catch up or absorbing costs elsewhere in the lineup.

The pushback against Apple's Chinese chip plan started weeks before Lutnick's comments, with a bipartisan group of senators urging the company to abandon its plans entirely. The Commerce Secretary's comments suggest that goodwill from Apple's Houston visit does not automatically extend to every supply chain decision the company wants to make.
