Trump Administration Targets Tech Firms with New Visa Proposal
The Trump administration has proposed ending the 60-day grace period for H-1B visa holders, which would force them to depart the country immediately after being laid off.
This move is part of President Donald Trump's efforts to curb legal immigration since his return to office in January 2025. The administration has also introduced steeper visa fees for skilled workers and halted immigrant visa appointments at U.S. posts worldwide while a new training program is implemented.
Gabriel Chin, a professor at the UC Davis School of Law, expressed concerns about the impact on H-1B workers who have spent years in the United States and have put down roots in their communities. He questioned the justification for making them leave due to job changes.
