Trump Removes Tariffs on Irish Whiskey Following Meeting with Martin

Irish Premier Micheál Martin said he 'planted a seed' when discussing US tariffs on Irish whiskey with Donald Trump, which led to the surprise announcement that the tariffs would be removed.

The US president made the announcement during his visit to Ireland, as he brought his two-day trip to a close at the Amgen Irish Open golf tournament in Co Clare. Martin told RTÉ Radio One that he had raised the issue of the 10% tariff on whiskey made in the Republic of Ireland with Trump.

Trump said he was removing the tariffs 'on behalf of the United States of America,' following a conversation with Martin and Irish Open winner Shane Lowry. The Irish Whiskey Association welcomed the announcement, stating that it would continue to work with EU and US counterparts to secure a return to the zero-for-zero arrangement for all drinks exports.
