Trump Renames Lake Ontario to 'Lake America'
President Donald Trump has ordered a change to the name of Lake Ontario as part of his escalating trade dispute with Canada. The lake, one of North America's five Great Lakes, will now appear as 'Lake America' in US Google Maps, while Canadians will continue to see its official name.
The update, which affects users in both countries, comes as tensions between Washington and Ottawa intensify over reciprocal tariffs affecting billions of dollars worth of goods. The executive order changing the lake's listing within the US Geographic Names Information System does not affect how it is identified elsewhere around the world.
For Australian Google Maps users, neither name has been completely replaced. Instead, both versions are displayed, with the lake appearing as 'Lake Ontario (Lake America)' on the platform.
