Trump's 'Lake America' Order Sparks Map Conflict

US President Donald Trump's executive order has sparked a change in how some digital maps label Lake Ontario. Apple and Google have relabeled the lake 'Lake America' for US users, following the president's directive to update the name in the US geographic naming service.

MapQuest, however, has refused to rename the lake, citing its long-standing policy of using names assigned by the relevant authorities. The company has seen a surge in downloads since its decision, topping the charts of free apps with new downloads in both the US and Canada on Apple's App Store.

Google Maps rolled out the change over the weekend, stating that it follows their practice of using names assigned by the US Geographic Names Information System. The company added that people using Maps in the US will see 'Lake America', while those in Canada will continue to see 'Lake Ontario', and those outside of the US and Canada will see both names.

However, not everyone agrees with the change. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected the move last week, invoking the lake's Indigenous roots and noting that the name predates both the Canadian Confederation and US Declaration of Independence.
