Trump's Third Pick Wins CDC Director Post Amid Turmoil
The US Senate has confirmed Dr. Erica Schwartz as the new director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), after repeated failed attempts by President Donald Trump to fill the top health post.
Schwartz was confirmed with a vote of 51-44, making her the first permanent CDC director since Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. fired Trump's second pick, Susan Monarez, last year over a clash on vaccine policy.
The confirmation comes at a time when the CDC is facing several challenges, including the worst US measles resurgence in three decades, an international Ebola outbreak, and the largest US foodborne illness outbreak in recent years.
Schwartz has pledged to restore trust through 'radical transparency and unwavering scientific integrity', aligning herself with Kennedy's agenda. She will also resign from her board roles at UnitedHealth Group and sell healthcare-related holdings.
