Turkish Tourists Flock to Greek Islands Despite Military Tension
Despite decades of political and military tension between Turkey and Greece, thousands of Turkish tourists are flocking to Greek islands for fresh seafood at affordable prices. This trend has delivered a massive economic boost to Greece's tourism industry, with over $1 billion in estimated tourism spending generated by Turkish visitors since the introduction of a visa-on-arrival scheme in April 2024.
According to calculations based on data from Turkey's Culture and Tourism Ministry and the Bank of Greece, over 1.6 million Turkish visitors traveled to Greek islands between April 2024 and July 2026, with their trips generating significant tourism revenue for Greece's Eastern Aegean islands. In 2025, Turkish tourists generated €544 million in travel receipts across Greece, while the country's total travel receipts reached €23.6 billion.
The special visa program, which offers a simpler alternative to the regular Schengen visa process for short island trips, was introduced on April 1, 2024, and initially covered 10 Greek islands. The scheme has since expanded to 12 islands and is set to remain in place until April 2027.
